Power Plants in Italy
Italy has 242 power plants mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 18th-largest fleet of the 155 countries that hold any, and 0.8% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 134 operating and 90 under construction or proposed. Operating generation capacity totals 61.7 GW across 134 utility-scale plants of 100 MW and above. The largest is Zefiro Vento offshore wind farm (3.1 GW).
The largest owner-operators are Enel SpA (44), A2A SpA (18) and Edison SpA (15) — Enel SpA alone is named on 18% of them. Half of Italy's power plants in service predate 1999 (median commissioning year of the 126 with a known date), 3 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Venina hydroelectric plant, dating from 1923. 90 are in the pipeline, led by Zefiro Vento offshore wind farm (3.1 GW), under construction. They account for 43% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in Italy.
