Grid Storage
OverWatts maps 965 grid storages across 58 countries. China holds the most — 401, 42% of the world total, ahead of United States (101). Operating capacity totals 206 GW. The largest is Yebatan Pumped Storage hydroelectric plant (4.5 GW).
The largest owner-operators worldwide are State Grid Xinyuan Co Ltd (55), Enel SpA (22) and Iberdrola SA (17). Half of the world's grid storages in service predate 1982 (median commissioning year of the 333 with a known date), 49 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Venina hydroelectric plant, dating from 1923. 622 more are under construction or proposed, the biggest being Yebatan Pumped Storage hydroelectric plant (4.5 GW).
