Spain has 35 grid storages mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 4th-largest fleet of the 58 countries that hold any, and 4% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 23 operating and 12 under construction or proposed. The largest is Conso II hydroelectric plant (1.8 GW).
The largest owner-operators are Iberdrola SA (15), Endesa SA (3) and Enel Green Power (3) — Iberdrola SA alone is named on 43% of them. Half of Spain's grid storages in service predate 1978 (median commissioning year of the 23 with a known date) and the oldest still listed is Puente Bibey hydroelectric plant, dating from 1960. 12 are in the pipeline, led by Conso II hydroelectric plant (1.8 GW), proposed. They account for 4% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in Spain.
