Grid Storages in China
China has 401 grid storages mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 1st-largest fleet of the 58 countries that hold any, and 42% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 60 operating and 341 under construction or proposed. The largest is Yebatan Pumped Storage hydroelectric plant (4.5 GW).
The largest owner-operators are State Grid Xinyuan Co Ltd (55), China Southern Power Grid Peak Shaving and Frequency Modulation Power Generation Co Ltd (12) and China Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Co Ltd (9) — State Grid Xinyuan Co Ltd alone is named on 14% of them. Half of China's grid storages in service predate 2017 (median commissioning year of the 60 with a known date), 33 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Xianghongdian Pumped Storage hydroelectric plant, dating from 1959. 341 are in the pipeline, led by Yebatan Pumped Storage hydroelectric plant (4.5 GW), proposed. They account for 2% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in China.
