Grid Storages in India
India has 86 grid storages mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 3rd-largest fleet of the 58 countries that hold any, and 9% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 10 operating and 76 under construction or proposed. The largest is UP01 hydroelectric plant (3.7 GW).
The largest owner-operators are Adani Green Energy (10), Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (8) and JSW Energy Ltd (6) — Adani Green Energy alone is named on 12% of them. Half of India's grid storages in service predate 2005 (median commissioning year of the 10 with a known date), 2 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Bhira Pumped Storage hydroelectric plant, dating from 1927. 76 are in the pipeline, led by UP01 hydroelectric plant (3.7 GW), proposed. They account for 3% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in India.
