India has 113 iron & steel plants mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 2nd-largest fleet of the 91 countries that hold any, and 9% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 88 operating and 24 under construction or proposed.
The largest owner-operators are JSW Steel Ltd (13), Steel Authority of India Ltd (8) and Jindal Steel Limited Ltd (7) — JSW Steel Ltd alone is named on 12% of them. Half of India's iron & steel plants in service predate 2003 (median commissioning year of the 69 with a known date), 15 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Tata Steel Jamshedpur steel plant, dating from 1912. 24 are in the pipeline, led by Action Ispat and Power Jharsuguda steel plant, proposed.
