India's steel belt sits on the coal that feeds it
Capacity heading for 300 MTPA by 2030 is being added in the one part of India where the mills, the mines and the coal plants already overlap.
India's crude steelmaking capacity reached about 222 MTPA in June 2026, against a national target of 300 MTPA by 2030 and roughly 100 MTPA a decade ago. That growth is not spread evenly across the country. It concentrates in the eastern belt running from Chhattisgarh through Odisha and Jharkhand into West Bengal, because that is where the inputs already are.
Switch on steel plants, coal-fired power and mines together, filtered to operating, and the belt resolves into one machine: 61 of India's operating steel plants, 137 of its operating coal-fired stations and 347 of its operating coal mines inside this single view, the mills sitting between the pits that feed them and the plants that power them. Three-quarters of the 113 Indian steel plants in the atlas fall inside this frame.
Co-location is why steel made here is cheap, and it is also why the emissions are hard to shift: capacity added in the belt defaults to the coal on its doorstep. The thing to watch is where the next expansions land - inland alongside the mines, or on the coast, where imported ore, scrap and gas are live options.
