Power Plants in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has 145 power plants mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 32nd-largest fleet of the 155 countries that hold any, and 0.5% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 98 operating and 46 under construction or proposed. Operating generation capacity totals 111 GW across 98 utility-scale plants of 100 MW and above. The largest is Ghazlan power plant (4.5 GW).
The largest owner-operators are Saudi Electricity Co (52), ACWA Power Co (29) and Water and Electricity Holding CO (Badeel) (14) — Saudi Electricity Co alone is named on 36% of them. Half of Saudi Arabia's power plants in service predate 2012 (median commissioning year of the 96 with a known date), 35 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Uthmaniyah power station, dating from 1974. 46 are in the pipeline, led by Ghazlan power plant (4.5 GW), under construction. They account for 50% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in Saudi Arabia.
