Power Plants in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has 128 power plants mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 34th-largest fleet of the 155 countries that hold any, and 0.4% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 88 operating and 36 under construction or proposed. Operating generation capacity totals 27.5 GW across 88 utility-scale plants of 100 MW and above. The largest is Phulbari power station (Sinohydro) (4.0 GW).
The largest owner-operators are Bangladesh Power Development Board (21), Rural Power Company Ltd (9) and Ashuganj Power Station Co Ltd (6) — Bangladesh Power Development Board alone is named on 16% of them. Half of Bangladesh's power plants in service predate 2018 (median commissioning year of the 88 with a known date), 53 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Karnafuli hydroelectric plant, dating from 1962. 36 are in the pipeline, led by Phulbari power station (Sinohydro) (4.0 GW), proposed. They account for 45% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in Bangladesh.
