Power Plants in Algeria
Algeria has 69 power plants mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 50th-largest fleet of the 155 countries that hold any, and 0.2% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 46 operating and 23 under construction or proposed. Operating generation capacity totals 27.1 GW across 46 utility-scale plants of 100 MW and above. The largest is Ras Djinet power plant (1.9 GW).
The largest owner-operators are Société Algérienne de Production de l'Electricité SpA (36), Sonelgaz SpA (20) and Sonatrach SpA (2) — Société Algérienne de Production de l'Electricité SpA alone is named on 52% of them. Half of Algeria's power plants in service predate 2010 (median commissioning year of the 43 with a known date), 11 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Mansouria hydroelectric plant, dating from 1963. 23 are in the pipeline, led by Oumache power station (1.3 GW), under construction. They account for 30% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in Algeria.

Frequently asked
- How many power plants are there in Algeria?
- OverWatts maps 69 power plants in Algeria — 0.2% of the world's mapped total, the 50th-largest national fleet of the 155 countries with any.
- What is the largest power plant in Algeria?
- Ras Djinet power plant, at 1.9 GW.
- How much power-generation capacity do Algeria's power plants have?
- About 27.1 GW operating across 46 plants, with a further 8.0 GW under construction or proposed. That covers utility-scale sites of 100 MW and above, so it sits below national installed capacity wherever distributed generation is large.
- Who owns the power plants in Algeria?
- Société Algérienne de Production de l'Electricité SpA is named as owner or operator on the most — 36 of 69 (52%). Next are Sonelgaz SpA (20), Sonatrach SpA (2) and China State Construction Engineering (1).
- How old are Algeria's power plants?
- The median commissioning year is 2010, across the 43 in service with a known start date. The oldest still listed is Mansouria hydroelectric plant (1963); 11 came online in the past ten years.
- What new power plants are being built in Algeria?
- 23 projects are under construction or proposed. The largest are Oumache power station (1.3 GW), Djelfa power station (1.2 GW) and Ogla Power Plant (700 MW).
