Power Plants in Iran
Iran has 169 power plants mapped on the OverWatts open energy atlas — the 25th-largest fleet of the 155 countries that hold any, and 0.6% of the world's mapped total. Of these, 124 operating and 44 under construction or proposed. Operating generation capacity totals 91.8 GW across 124 utility-scale plants of 100 MW and above. The largest is Iran-Hormoz nuclear power plant (5.0 GW).
The largest owner-operators are Iran Water and Power Resources Development Co (18), Thermal Power Plants Holding Co (16) and Saba Power and Energy Group (4) — Iran Water and Power Resources Development Co alone is named on 11% of them. Half of Iran's power plants in service predate 2010 (median commissioning year of the 116 with a known date), 39 came online in the past decade and the oldest still listed is Dez 1 hydroelectric plant, dating from 1963. 44 are in the pipeline, led by Iran-Hormoz nuclear power plant (5.0 GW), under construction. They account for 28% of every energy asset OverWatts maps in Iran.
